The NFL offseason has left many star players working their way back from injuries suffered in 2025. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is among those key players rehabbing a significant injury. Kittle suffered what was later revealed to be a torn Achilles tendon during the 2025 Wild Card Round.

Injuries of that magnitude typically require around nine months of recovery. However, based on Kittle’s latest comments, he could be on pace for a remarkable comeback. While speaking with reporters, Kittle indicated that his recovery remains on schedule — potentially even for Week 1.

The 49ers will open the season against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on Thursday night. If Kittle is available for that game, it would represent an exceptionally rapid recovery timeline, as he would return in less than nine months. Sports medicine has advanced significantly in recent years, but even by modern standards, it would be an impressive recovery.

Kittle also explained how that possibility has motivated him throughout the rehabilitation process.
“Definitely ignites something and makes you push for it. We are on track. We are ahead of schedule,” he said.

The 49ers will need Kittle and the rest of their offense healthy if they hope to contend in 2026. Not only do they share a division with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, but the Rams have also emerged as a legitimate threat atop the NFC West. San Francisco has spent the offseason navigating changes at wide receiver and addressing ongoing concerns along the offensive line.

He remains one of the NFL’s premier tight ends and one of quarterback Brock Purdy’s most reliable targets. Injuries limited Kittle during the 2025 season, but his determination throughout the recovery process has given the 49ers reason for optimism.
Kittle originally suffered a torn hamstring against the Seattle Seahawks early in the season, forcing him to miss the next five games. After a brief stint on injured reserve, he returned in Week 7 and played the remainder of the season before suffering the Achilles injury in the playoffs.
Now, Kittle has an opportunity to make a remarkable recovery from one of sports’ most devastating injuries. The question is whether he’ll be on the field when the 49ers face their division rivals to open the season.
