Charles Barkley was on the hot seat ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

The "Inside the NBA" star is renowned — or perhaps reviled — for his commentary on all things on-and-off the floor. Ahead of the Spurs' joust with the Knicks, a luminary held his feet to the flames regarding one of his signature topics of discussion: his opinion on women from San Antonio.

Here's what you need to know about Barkley's interaction with the mayor of San Antonio on Wednesday night.

Mayor of San Antonio confronts Charles Barkley

While appearing on "Inside the NBA" ahead of Wednesday's Game 1, Barkley and the ESPN crew were joined by a special guest: Gina Ortiz Jones, the mayor San Antonio.

The production crew proceeded to show a reel of Barkley's "greatest hits", a series of his barbs towards the city of San Antonio at large.

Jones leaned into Barkley's bit, firing off a short — but venomous — insult towards the Basketball Hall of Famer.

"I learned a long time ago you can't teach courage, you can't teach class," Ortiz said. "And Mr. Barkley reminds us of that."

What has Charles Barkley said about San Antonio?

What hasn't Barkley said about San Antonio? The "Inside the NBA" pundit has been one of the city's most vocal detractors, routinely delivering tongue-in-cheek comments towards the city's population — specifically its women.

Essentially, Barkley has poked fun at the women of San Antonio, claiming the city is filled with "big ole women." They aren't the kindest of words, to be fair. But he's kept the bit going for more than a decade, often eliciting laughs from his colleagues — namely Shaquille O'Neal.

Is Gina Ortiz Jones a Republican or Democrat?

Jones is a member of the Democratic Party. The 2018 Democratic nominee for Texas' 23rd congressional district, Jones narrowly lost to incumbent Republican Will Hurd. After falling to Tony Gonzales in the 2020 general election and serving in Joe Biden's administration as Under Secretary of the Air Force, Jones won the 2025 mayoral election in a run-off.

With her win, she became the first Asian-American female mayor of a major city in Texas and first openly lesbian mayor of San Antonio.
