Following the fatal collision, Peterson has been remembered by his baseball team at Glenwood Middle School in a tribute posted on Facebook.
“Luke had an undeniable impact on the middle school team last fall as a 7th grader,” Glenwood Baseball wrote. “His potential was limitless as a baseball player and young man.”
The team added, “Please keep Luke’s family in your thoughts and prayers during their time of profound grief. Forever in our hearts Lukey P #13.”
A memorial honoring Peterson has been set up at the mound, while players are away from the field until August. The spot is where Peterson was the winning pitcher of the Regional Championship game last fall, Glenwood Baseball said in another post.
“If you would like to place a baseball there in his memory, feel free to do so,” the team said.
An investigation into the fatal crash has been launched.
The McLean County Coroner, the Illinois State Police and Glenwood Middle School did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
