Flick requests Barcelona for a new addition to his backroom staff for next season

Barcelona may be preparing for important changes in the coaching staff this summer after Hansi Flick identified physical conditioning as one of the club’s biggest weaknesses.

According to AS, the German coach is understood to have requested the arrival of an additional fitness specialist ahead of next season as part of his plans to raise the team’s competitiveness at European level.

Barcelona’s technical structure is already expected to undergo changes following the departures of Thiago Alcantara and Stephan Nopp this summer.

Those exits will significantly reduce Flick’s immediate coaching staff, prompting the manager to push for reinforcements internally.

Flick has forwarded his request

Rather than focusing on tactical or technical additions, the Barcelona coach believes the squad requires stronger physical preparation if the club want to seriously compete for the UEFA Champions League next season.

The request comes after another campaign heavily affected by physical problems and injuries across multiple areas of the squad.

Within Barcelona, there is growing awareness that recurring injury issues have damaged the team’s consistency in recent years, limiting their ability to maintain intensity across long stretches of the season.

Flick determined to improve the physical level

Flick’s coaching philosophy has always relied heavily on intensity, pressing and aggressive transitions.

To sustain that style against Europe’s top clubs, the German believes Barcelona need to reach a much higher physical standard, which explains why improving conditioning has become one of his priorities.

Notably, the current head of fitness, Julio Tous, is expected to remain at the club, although Flick wants additional support within the department to strengthen the overall structure around player preparation and recovery.

According to the outlet, club officials have made it clear that Tous will continue leading the fitness department regardless of whether another specialist arrives.

This means any new appointment would work alongside the current structure rather than replace it entirely.

Flick is now expected to discuss the matter further with the board in search of a solution that satisfies all sides.
