Mets Routed Again By Reds, 7-2, As Peterson Gets Pounded In Yet Another Start

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Mets lost again to the Cincinnati Reds, 7-2, as David Peterson’s string of four straight decent starts came to an abrupt end as the Reds pounded out six runs in six innings against the problematic Mets left-hander.

This was another game where the Mets got behind big early, and it was both their fifth straight loss and the fifth straight game in which the Mets scored two runs or less.

The Reds got to Peterson early with a pair of runs in the first on a two-run RBI double by Eugenio Suarez. They battered Peterson again in the fourth with three runs, with the first coming on a single by Tyler Stephenson, and Elly De La Cruz doubled in two more to make it 5-0.

The rest of the game was mostly about cosmetics and filling in the blanks. The Mets, meanwhile were getting just one hit with their popgun offense as they continue to be a team that can’t climb out of deep holes. The Reds got their sixth run on an RBI double by JJ Bleday, and Sal Stewart singled home the seventh run in the eighth to get to the final count.

The best the Mets could do was a two-run homer by Juan Soto in the sixth to make it 6-2, with the blast driving home Bo Bichette after Biechette singled. The Mets got just five hits in the game as starter Chase Burns and a string of four Reds relievers proceeded to strike out ten and shut the Mets down other than the Soto dinger.

Peterson made it through five in this one, as his status in the rotation has to once again be in question. Sean Manaea did another nice turn in relief as he pitched three innings and gave up just one run, and Jesse Minter returned from the injured list to pitch a scoreless ninth in what represented the best pitching news of the night.

The Mets have now matched their lowest mark of the season as they plunged to 11 games under .500, and the solid work they did at the beginning of the month to spark what looked like a possible turnaround is now well in the rear view. The Mets haven’t officially listed a starter for tomorrow night, but as of yesterday Jonah Tong was scheduled to at least make an appearance in the series finale.
