Fernando Alonso Has Zero Points in 2026, but Refuses To Drop His ‘Best Driver’ Crown

According to a fresh report from Motorsport.com, Alonso delivered a fiercely defiant statement during media day ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. When reporters asked how a driver measures his own personal progress when trapped in uncompetitive machinery, Alonso completely dismissed the premise of the question.

“I don’t measure anything,” Alonso stated bluntly. “I’m the best. I don’t need to prove anything. I don’t need to feel anything to believe that I’m at the right level”.

It is a staggering level of self-belief, especially considering the bleak reality inside the Aston Martin garage right now. The team has paused all major aerodynamic upgrades until after the summer break. The engineering department is entirely consumed by crippling reliability and driveability issues stemming from their transition to Honda power units.

Alonso recently pulled the curtain back on just how bad the AMR26 chassis really is. He admitted that even if the team perfectly fixes the current driveability problems, such as violent downshifts and unpredictable engine braking, it would only recover about “half a tenth” of lap time (via Motorsport.com).

Despite currently sitting 21st in the Drivers’ Championship with zero points, Alonso refuses to let the telemetry dictate his self-worth. In fact, the Spaniard noted that he will only start to worry about his declining skills when he goes to a go-kart track and is no longer the absolute fastest driver on the asphalt.

He knows that his current machinery is completely incapable of fighting at the front of the pack.
