Is Emeka Egbuka Ready To Fill Mike Evans' Shoes?
· Yahoo Sports
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers struck gold when they drafted Emeka Egbuka 19th overall in 2025. Egbuka, along with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, gave QB Baker Mayfield a lethal trio of receivers.
Unfortunately, injuries to both Evans and Godwin prevented the trio from regularly seeing the field together. Even with Godwin healthy again, the success of the Bucs' offense in 2026 largely falls on the shoulders of their second-year star WR.

Is Emeka Egbuka ready to fill Mike Evans' shoes after the franchise icon left Tampa for San Francisco in free agency? If the Bucs want to reclaim their spot atop the NFC South, he will need to be.
Cause For ConcernAlthough Egbuka had a fantastic rookie season, there is cause for concern about his ability to be a WR1 in 2026. While Egbuka finished his rookie campaign with an impressive stat line of 63 catches, 938 yards and 6 touchdowns, his season was a tale of two halves.
After storming out of the gate at the start of the season, Egbuka's production sharply declined in the second half of 2025. Over the final eight games, Egbuka did not find the end zone and only eclipsed 42 receiving yards once.
Was this just a product of Egbuka hitting a rookie wall, or were defenses just able to key in on the rookie due to the injuries to Evans and Godwin? It was probably a combination of both.
No matter the reason, Egbuka must now find a way to dominate, no matter how much attention he draws from the defense. The best WRs in the NFL constantly get double-teamed or have a safety cheat to their side.
Egbuka must now find a way to win, no matter what a defense throws at him. Is he ready for that?
Reasons For OptimismThere are several reasons for optimism. Egbuka is immensely talented, and he puts in the work to get better every day. He has called himself a perfectionist and will never be satisfied or become complacent. That mindset will certainly benefit him as he prepares for a larger role.
“There is just something innate in me that makes me drive with everything just a little bit more,” Egbuka told Buccaneers.com. “I am an over-achiever and a perfectionist to the nth degree, but I think part of that has led me to get here.”
Another reason to be optimistic in Tampa Bay is that the Bucs should still have an explosive offense in 2026, even without Evans. A healthy Chris Godwin will take some of the pressure off of Egbuka. Rookie WR Ted Hurst, with his 6'4 size and 4.42 speed, can stretch the defense and open up plenty of space for Egbuka to operate.
Hopefully, Egbuka, Godwin, and Hurst can form the dynamic trio the Bucs thought they would have last year. The Bucs also added RB Kenneth Gainwell to pair with Bucky Irving, which should help bring balance to Tampa's offense.
Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism is that Egbuka believes he is ready to fill Mike Evans' shoes. In an interview with Kay Adams, Egbuka spoke of being the one who receives the passing of the torch and that leadership comes naturally to him. Exactly the type of attitude that is necessary to make a second-year leap.
“There’s a passing of the torch, and it needs to be received by someone… [Leadership] is something that’s always come naturally to me.”

Final ThoughtsExpect a big year for Emeka Egbuka in 2026. Nobody will ever make anyone forget about Mike Evans, but Egbuka has everything he needs to be a legit WR1. The transition from Evans to Egbuka should be seamless.
A big upcoming season from Emeka Egbuka will be a major catalyst in Tampa Bay getting back to the playoffs this season.
