Auburn drops slightly in RPI following Thursday's loss to Georgia

· Yahoo Sports

The No. 6 Auburn Tigers dropped a heartbreaker to No. 4 Georgia in game one of their final regular-season SEC series on Thursday, 2-1. It was a typical day for both teams as Auburn's offense failed to provide ace pitcher Jake Marciano with run support, and Georgia used its strength to its advantage by hitting two solo home runs, increasing its NCAA-leading home run total to 142.

Auburn baseball needs to earn as many quality wins as possible ahead of the NCAA Tournament, which begins in two weeks, to improve its odds of earning a national seed for the second straight season. How much did Auburn's loss to Georgia on Thursday affect their chances?

According to the latest RPI rankings from D1Baseball, Auburn is No. 3 in the rankings, falling one spot from Thursday's update. The Tigers' loss to Georgia dropped their record against Quad 1 teams to 13-14 on the season; however, Auburn remains one of 13 teams across the country to own more than 10 wins against Quad 1 teams, which works in its favor. Outside of losing to Georgia, the biggest factor in Auburn falling from No. 2 to No. 3 is Georgia Tech's win over Boston College on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets shut out Boston College, 9-0, on Thursday night on the road to earn another Quad 1 win and to regain the No. 2 slot after losing it to Auburn during midweek action.

The greatest battle of the RPI over the next two weeks could very well be Auburn vs Georgia Tech, as the two will continue to duke it out until the NCAA Regionals begin on May 29.

Auburn baseball will look to even the series with Georgia on Friday, with a victory increasing its win total over Quad 1 teams and boosting its chances to lock down a host seed. Game two of the series between the Tigers and Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park, with SEC Network handling the broadcast of the game.
