It's not often that a player's given name includes a built-in nickname, but that was the case for former Cincinnati defensive lineman Dontay Corleone.
The NFL Draft prospect will bring one of the best nicknames in all of sports to his next team, as Corleone also goes by “The Godfather.” While many players have a unique story behind their nickname, Corleone’s comes simply from his family name.
After spending his entire career at Cincinnati, Corleone did not play in front of a national audience very often. However, once he joins an NFL team, that fan base will have a chance to fully embrace the defensive tackle’s nickname.

Corleone’s nickname is The Godfather, which is simply because his last name is the same as the moniker used in “The Godfather” trilogy. The legendary book and movies are based around the Corleone family, an Italian-American mafia family in New York.
“When I committed here, the fans gave it to me, so I just took the role of it,” he told Max Chadwick in 2023. “I took it because it’s pretty good off of my last name, and I’ve just loved it since day one.”

At the time, Corleone said he had yet to see all three of "The Godfather" movies, but he still embraced the name in college. The Cincinnati fanbase leaned into Corleone's nickname in creative ways, like with Corleone's own burger and pizza at local restaurants.
In turn, Corleone was excited to represent his hometown school for the past four seasons.

Corleone is a 340-pound defensive tackle who provides a massive presence on the inside of the defensive line. That kind of player can be an intimidating presence, much like a mafia boss.
