“They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old,” Contreras said, as reported by the Boston Globe. “So next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out.

“That’s a message.”

Red Sox’s Wilson Contreras delivers warning flare

The public warning was issued Monday night after Contreras, an 11-year veteran, endured his 24th hit by pitch by Milwaukee Brewers hurlers.

His anger extended to Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff, who hit Contreras for the sixth time. In the bottom of the third inning Monday, Woodruff allowed a lead-off single to Roman Antony before walking Masataka Yoshida.

With runners on first and second and the last-place Red Sox, who are off to a slow start, in need of a spark, Contreras absorbed another hit by pitch, loading the bases. The Red Sox scored two runs in the inning, but suffered an 8-6 loss at Fenway Park. The teams resume the three-game series Tuesday.

Contreras, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run Monday, continues to take the HBPs personally, sliding hard into second baseman David Hamilton.

"It's not just a hit by pitch,” Contreras said, as reported by NESN. “That's the 24th time (the Brewers have) hit me in my career. That's the sixth time (Woodruff) hit me. It’s not (a) coincidence ... they're gonna hit me again and we'll see what happens."

Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he wasn’t concerned about Contreras’ message to the Brewers’ pitching staff. "We’ve seen that skit for the last 10 years,” he said.

“It’s nothing new."
