The World Baseball Classic semifinal between the Dominican Republic and Team USA was a tight, tense contest for nine innings.

The Dominican Republic took an early lead with a home run from Junior Caminero against American ace Paul Skenes. The USA responded with fourth-inning blasts from Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony.

Then Team USA held on for dear life, escaping Dominican threats for the rest of the game for a 2-1 victory.

The final out came with a runner on third base. USA reliever Mason Miller struck out Dominican batter Geraldo Perdomo on a slider that appeared low.

The WBC does not use the Automated Ball Strike (ABS) system that will debut in Major League Baseball this season. Thus, the call could not be challenged.

“I knew 100% it was a ball,” Perdomo said, per the New York Post. “I knew it.”

Dominican slugger Juan Soto, a former New York Yankee who now plays for the New York Mets, went 0-for-4 during Sunday’s game.

The last out probably looked familiar to Soto, who struck out on a similar pitch from USA’s Garrett Whitlock to start the bottom of the eighth inning.

After the game, Soto had a curt response when asked about the outcome.

“We showed the world who’s the best team in baseball,” Soto said. “That’s all I got to say.”‘

The WBC semifinals continue at 8 p.m. ET Monday with Italy taking on Venezuela at Miami’s loanDepot Park. Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the game, and it will be streamed on Fox Sports 1.

The winner of Monday’s game will meet Team USA for the WBC title at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
