NC State fired Doeren on October 24 after a 31-28 loss to Stanford left the team with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in ACC play. Doeren had led the program since 2013, recording 98 wins, the most in school history. Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel was appointed interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

After helping the Wolfpack finish 9-4 in 2010, he transferred to Wisconsin, where he threw for 3,175 yards and 33 touchdowns.
The Seattle Seahawks selected Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL from 2012 to 2025, leading Seattle to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory after the 2013 season. Rivers’ name has also surfaced during the search process. He played for the Wolfpack from 2000 to 2003, starting 51 games before the New York Giants selected him fourth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. He spent most of his 17-plus-season NFL career with the Chargers and earned eight Pro Bowl selections.

Former NFL head coach Bill Cowher and former NC State player Dwayne Washington are serving as advisers. The next head coach will be responsible for recruiting, the transfer portal, NIL, player retention and the team’s on-field performance.
Meanwhile, Goebbel began his interim tenure against California on October 31. NC State won 31-10, scoring 21 points in the second half while holding California scoreless after halftime. The victory improved the Wolfpack’s record to 4-4.
NC State’s coaching search remains ongoing as university officials continue evaluating candidates to lead the program moving forward.
