Owono was immediately handed a red card and began walking off the pitch. De Miguel initially laid with his head and knees on the grass before turning onto his back. He then became motionless, resulting in an opposing player immediately calling to the sideline for help. Once Owono realized the severity of the situation, he stopped walking off the field and turned back to check on de Miguel. Owono faces a suspension for the collision.

The match did not continue. De Miguel was transferred to a hospital and was initially deemed “stable despite the severity of his condition,” Tenerife said in a statement after the game. Later in the day, however, the team said de Miguel’s condition had “worsened neurologically.”

On Tuesday morning, Tenerife announced de Miguel’s death. The team’s statement, which was translated from Spanish to English, read:

Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.

There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.

The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments.

In the wake of the news, Andorra also released a statement sending their “most sincere condolences” to de Miguel’s family.

Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona issued statements expressing their condolences and extending support to de Miguel’s family. De Miguel was born in Madrid.

Following de Miguel’s death, the Royal Spanish Football Federation announced all matches would be suspended Tuesday.

De Miguel began his senior career in 2015 and played for eight different teams. He joined Tenerife on a three-year deal in 2025 and had 11 goals in 34 appearances with the club.
