Mares played most of his junior career in Czechia. His 35 points in 47 regular season games and 8 points in 7 playoff games in the U20 league was enough to earn him a spot in the QMJHL for the Rimouski Océanic. He currently has 16 points in 15 games so far in the 2026-27 season.

Most projections have Mares as a late first or early second round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. The 17-year old is one of the top forwards in the class. At 6-6, 235 pounds, he will be by far the tallest and biggest forward on Penn State’s roster. He is not slated to join Penn State until 2028-29, at age 19. This is a very solid pickup for Guy Gadowsky and company.
