The Bulldogs stifled Florida in a 27-8 Bulldogs’ romp on Saturday.
Then a big job in the coaching carousel opened up on Sunday when Florida State fired Mike Norvell after a loss to Clemson dropped the Seminoles to 3-5.
Schumann, whose name has been connected to openings in the past for Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator and North Carolina head coach, is viewed by many as a name to watch for the Florida State job.
USA TODAY Sports lists Schumann among six top candidates for the opening.
It will cost Florida State a $50.3 million buyout for firing Norvell, but Schumann would not be on the hook for any buyout to Georgia if the ACC school wanted to hire him, according to the latest amendment to his contract obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald.
“…if Schumann terminates this agreement or terminates his employment with the University in order to take a position as a head football coach of either an NFL football team or the football team of an Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference or Southeastern Conference member institution, then Schumann shall not owe the Association his Liquidated Damages payment,” the amendment says.
There are also openings at N.C. State, Baylor and Maryland where Schumann could appeal to those schools.
Schumann is making $2.2 million this year in a contract that runs through the end of the 2028 season following a contract extension in January.
The 36-year old Schumann has coached under Smart for 11 seasons as a Georgia assistant after following him from Alabama where Schumann was a student and graduate assistant and on the support staff.
The inside linebackers coach is in his fourth season as defensive coordinator. He was co-defensive coordinator with Will Muschamp in 2022.
Georgia is ninth nationally in total defense at 272.6 yards per game and leads the SEC and is 11th in scoring defense at 14.9 points per game.
“Glenn Schumann is a great defensive coordinator,” Georgia outside linebacker Quintavius Johnson said Monday. “ He teaches us different things every day. He gives us great game plans going into different games, knowing the different type of offense that we have to face.”
The others USA TODAY Sports listed as candidates for Florida State: Duke coach Manny Diaz, former Florida State and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, Florida Atlantic coach Zach Kittley, LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, the former Florida State star.
Schumann has worked under two of the top head coaches in the modern era in Nick Saban at Alabama and Smart at Georgia.
“I just think when you're around people that are really good at what they do, whether that's head coaches or assistant coaches or players, you learn from everybody you're around,” Schumann said. “I think that's how everybody gets prepared for their next step in life.”
