What Bill Belichick said about UNC football onside kicks vs Miami

CHAPEL HILL — UNC football recovered consecutive onside kicks in the final two minutes against No. 1 Miami, but consecutive penalties negated the recoveries in a 38-35 loss.
“It’s probably about right,” UNC coach Bill Belichick said. “They’re both close. They looked close to me.”

On the first onside kick, Shamar Easter was called offside. On the second onside kick, Peyton Seelmann was tagged with an illegal block.
“That was pretty tough,” Seelmann said. “A little upsetting that we didn’t get either of them. It’s what the refs called and it’s what happened.”
Seelmann felt the Tar Heels (4-4, 2-3 ACC) were “gonna go win it” before the officials revealed the penalties.
“It’s ‘cause the ball didn’t go 10 yards yet and I hit him,” Seelmann said of the blocking penalty.
But UNC had to kick a third onside kick and the top-ranked Hurricanes (8-0, 6-0) recovered it, eventually entering to victory formation to escape Kenan Stadium with their undefeated record still intact.
“I don’t know, I kind of just assumed the ball was right there because I saw him go like this,” Seelmann said, opening his hands. “I just went out to hit him a little too early.”
UNC scored touchdowns on five of its seven drives, but a strip-sack fumble allowed Miami to take a double-digit lead in the final minutes. The Hurricanes scored on six of their seven possessions, punting once with five touchdowns and a field goal.
