Greg Schiano’s team pushed a Wolverines team that’s had struggles of its own this season, but gave up a fourth-quarter touchdown that sent Rutgers to a 28-21 loss on Saturday, Oct. 31 at SHI Stadium.
The Scarlet Knights fell to 2-6 on the season, including 1-4 in Big Ten play.
And this was among the most disappointing defeats so far for Rutgers, which had a chance despite a completely underwhelming and uninspiring offensive performance.
The Scarlet Knights couldn’t make enough plays and they couldn’t capitalize against a Michigan team that turned in a lackluster performance of its own.
Rutgers was without starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan, who suffered an injury in the previous game against Northwestern.
Backup AJ Surace started in his place and finished 3-of-12 passing for 123 yards with one touchdown.
He didn’t complete a single pass the entire second half.
The biggest concern coming into this game for Rutgers was how its offense would fare about Michigan’s defense, which has played at a high level all season and has been the strength of the team.
The Scarlet Knights, who had just 249 total yards of offense, managed to hit on some big plays, with Surace hitting Jourdin Houston for an 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first half and Antwan Raymond breaking off a 54-yard run on third-and-4 early in the fourth quarter that helped set up a game-tying touchdown – Clay Thevenin punched it in from a yard out and the Scarlet Knights converted the two-point attempt.
And while Rutgers’ defense mostly held its own against a bad Michigan offense, Travis Johansen’s unit couldn’t stop the Wolverines, who had 427 total yards, on their ensuing possession.
Michigan, which started a true freshman quarterback in Tommy Carr, put together an 11-play scoring drive that culminated in a nine-yard touchdown run by Carr, which put the Wolverines up 28-21.
That was difference in the game.
Neither team played well. But Michigan managed to pull out a win while Rutgers endured another disappointing and dispiriting defeat.
