Appearing on New York Post Sports’ The Show on Tuesday, October 27, Posada, 55, was asked whether he would take a position with the team now, perhaps as a member of the coaching staff.
“I could, but I don’t think they want me there to tell you the truth. I don’t feel welcome when I go there, you know?” the catcher, who played 17 years for the Yankees, responded. “Even in spring training, I don’t feel like — I’m just like, I don’t know, like, I don’t feel welcome. I don’t feel like they want me there, so I don’t go.”
When asked why he thinks that’s the case, the five-time All-Star said he’s not sure what happened.
“I’d rather just move forward. My last season of my career was a really tough one when it comes to handling everything in my part and also the Yankees toward Jorge Posada. So, it’s tough to go back and feel that again,” he added.
As he admitted, his final season in 2011 wasn’t an easy one. He, at one point, asked to be taken off the lineup after being moved to designated hitter and backup first baseman.
Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post / MEGAAfter the four-time World Series winner’s comments were shared to X, Chamberlain, 41, reposted his remarks and added, “Says a lot coming from him, just saying.”
When a follower said that if people like Posada and Derek Jeter “are not wanted around, that means things are way worse than us on the outside already think they are,” the pitcher added, “Seems like there are some that they love that are still around.”
To another fan who wrote, “I agree with Jorge. The Yankees look down on former players. George is rolling over in his grave from what the Yankees have become. As a Rays fan we no longer cringe when we play the Yankees,” Chamberlain added, “Who knows anymore.”
He also said he believes Posada would make an “amazing coach/manager.”
Despite Posada’s recent comments, the baseball great did attend two games at Yankee Stadium this season — first for Old Timers’ Day in August, before appearing at a game on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
