SC Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster believes his side showed plenty of character against Bayern Munich despite ultimately suffering a 3-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena.

Freiburg started positively, implementing their usual tactical approach of mixing a high press with periods of deeper defending. According to Schuster, that strategy helped his team settle into the contest, and they even had a promising opportunity before Bayern opened the scoring.

However, Bayern’s clinical finishing proved decisive. The hosts capitalized on their chances to establish a 2-0 lead by halftime, leaving Freiburg with a difficult challenge against one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking sides.

“We generally choose an approach that we want to stand for. It involves the right mix of pressing high up the field and, at times, defending deeper near the goal. That got us off to a good start in the game,” Schuster explained (as captured by SC Freiburg’s social media team. “Before the first goal, we had a good chance. Then it was a matter of stopping the threat. Bayern made good use of their opportunities. Then it was 0–2 at halftime. That doesn’t make it easy. To keep the faith going—the team managed to do that.”

Schuster revealed that Freiburg’s halftime message was straightforward — score once, and the game could become much more competitive. His players responded with renewed belief, but they ultimately fell short of completing their comeback.

“At halftime, we said: ‘We have to score a goal, then things will really heat up.’ In the end, we were close to scoring the second one. It’s a shame we didn’t manage to do that,” Schuster noted.

For Freiburg, the disappointment will center on missed opportunities. For Bayern, the victory demonstrated the importance of clinical finishing and managing difficult moments against an opponent determined to fight until the final whistle.
