Mateer and the Sooners knew that the SEC was supposed to be competitive and that they would have to struggle in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

However, given the rich heritage and history that the Sooners have as a college football powerhouse, a win was huge for the Sooners coming into the weekend.

John Mateer shares inspirational post-game comments after Sooners win

Speaking to reporters after the game, Oklahoma Sooners QB John Mateer explained how he overcame difficult experiences before and during games.

He noted that he embraced his previous issues coming into the game, along with any possible mistakes he made during the game, with a mentality of forgiveness and focusing on the next opportunity instead.

Mateer said: “I woke up in the middle of the night and something told me to forgive yourself. It was really powerful stuff. I hope everybody hears that. I knew when it happened. Forgive yourself, and next play matters.

“All day, all I thought was the least important thing. The least important thing just happened. So the next play, focus on being calm and believing in who I am. I think I said earlier this week that I know who I am as a player and as a man.

“Through struggle, that’s what you find. I’m not perfect and I won’t be perfect moving forward. But I felt good out there and I believed.”

This mindset seems to have paid off for Mateer, who delivered a strong performance in the Sooners’ 23-15 win over Mississippi State.

He threw for 283 yards with two touchdowns, with a QB rating of 89.0. The Sooners will be hoping to win their next game to make sure they can win consecutive games for the first time this season.
