The Texas Longhorns’ season continued to unravel on Saturday, as Arch Manning and company suffered a stunning home loss to the unranked Florida Gators. And one former NFL running back and Alabama Crimson Tide star thinks it’s time to stop giving Manning the benefit of the doubt because of his famous last name.

CBS Sports analyst Damien Harris didn’t hold back in his assessment of the Texas quarterback, calling Manning “a below-average quarterback” and announcing that he’ll refer to him only as “Arch” until his play improves.

Texas Falls to Florida

Manning began the season as one of the preseason favorites to be the top overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, but he certainly hasn’t looked the part so far this season, and that trend continued on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 7 Longhorns fell 27-24 to Florida on Saturday for their second straight loss, following last week’s defeat against Oklahoma. Texas built a 17-3 lead, but the Gators rallied behind quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., who was making his first career start.

Manning finished 14-of-20 for 173 yards and a late touchdown, but he couldn’t lead a comeback after Florida went up by 10 in the fourth quarter. To make matters worse, Manning had yet another crucial turnover on the team’s final drive, fumbling the ball back to Florida with the game on the line.

‘Just gonna call him Arch’

Harris clearly saw enough. He made it known that he’ll be leaving the Manning name out of his evaluations of the Texas star from here on out.

“Until further notice, I’m just gonna call him Arch. Because if you take away the last name, you have a below-average quarterback. And that’s what he is, and that’s how we need to evaluate it moving forward,” Harris said, via CBS Sports. “He does not see the football field well. He does not deliver a pretty football.”

Harris called out some issues he has with Manning’s mechanics, saying “nothing” about his play particularly impresses him.

“When he throws the football, he looks uncomfortable. He’s got this thing that he does where it seems like he’s always trying to loosen up his shoulder. What is it? Mechanics don’t look good. Game management doesn’t look good,” Harris said. “Nothing about Arch Manning’s game looks good.”

Harris then explained why inconsistency at quarterback is such a big problem.

“I had a coach once who told me, if you’re good one day and you’re bad another day, guess what you are? You’re bad. Bad. Because you don’t get to have days where you play up and down, especially not at the quarterback position,” Harris said. “When you got a quarterback that can’t do any of that well, you’re not gonna win football games. As a matter of fact, you’re going to lose football games. And we saw that against Oklahoma. We’re watching it in live time against Florida.”

“Arch Manning isn’t playing like a Manning. He’s playing like Arch,” Harris added. “We need to stop holding on to this last name and say, well, we’re expecting more, we want to see more, there’s potential out there.”

“No, Arch is a bad quarterback right now. And until he becomes a good or a better quarterback, Arch, that’s all you’re gonna get out of me.”

Needless to say, Manning has a lot of work to do to win Harris back over.
