Adi Hütter praises captain Robin Koch’s response to Leipzig humiliation: “He showed what he’s capable of.”

Eintracht Frankfurt captain Robin Koch has earned special praise from head coach Adi Hütter following Friday evening’s 1-0 Bundesliga victory over 1. FC Cologne. The German international’s improved performance came just six days after he was withdrawn at halftime during Frankfurt’s humiliating 6-0 defeat away at RB Leipzig. Hütter, who had publicly criticized Koch following that match, made a point of recognizing his captain’s contribution to the team’s much-needed clean sheet.

Younes Ebnoutalib’s 77th-minute winner secured Frankfurt’s first Bundesliga home victory since March 14th. For Hütter, however, the improvement in defensive organization was just as significant as the result. The Austrian spoke of his satisfaction with the team’s reaction at the post-match press conference.
“We fought back,” Hütter noted. “The team showed a new face from the first minute onward. To win 1-0 after a 0-6 shellacking isn’t just important for us, but also – after six months during which we didn’t win at home – something that makes me very happy for our fans and all the supporters here in Frankfurt. [It’s important] that we were once again allowed to celebrate a home win.”
Hütter singles out Robin Koch after Leipzig criticism
“At this point, I’d like to convey extra praise for Robin Koch,” Hütter continued. “He showed today what he’s capable of. The fact that we kept a clean sheet after conceding six times in a smackdown is very important.”
The comments represented a remarkable turnaround from the previous week. Koch had endured a miserable evening against Leipzig and was substituted at halftime. Hütter made no attempt to disguise the performance-related nature of the decision.
As Get German Football Newsreported ahead of the Cologne encounter, Hütter nevertheless rejected any suggestion that his captain might lose his place in the starting XI.
“Robin will play on Friday and remain captain,” Hütter insisted at Wednesday’s pre-match press conference. “There’s absolutely no discussion about that. Naturally, I also expect Robin to use his voice as a leader to organize the team. That’s something I particularly missed in the first half against Leipzig.”
Koch duly returned to the starting lineup alongside Lilian Brassier and delivered a considerably more assured performance. The 30-year-old wasn’t completely faultless, notably failing to close down Said El Mala quickly enough during the Cologne attacker’s spectacular first-half solo run.
Nevertheless, Koch made several important defensive interventions and generally played a much more disciplined game. The Frankfurt skipper won an impressive 92 percent of his duels. He also contributed crucial defensive interventions during the 12th and 68th minutes.
Koch’s steadier work in possession helped Frankfurt maintain their organization during a match in which Köln occasionally threatened on the counterattack. With goalkeeper Noah Atubolu providing important first-half saves, Frankfurt were ultimately able to keep their first clean sheet immediately after conceding six goals in Leipzig.
A welcome response from Frankfurt’s embattled captain
Koch’s recent struggles have been a recurring topic throughout Frankfurt’s turbulent year. The Kaiserslautern native inherited the captain’s armband from Kevin Trapp in August 2025 and has subsequently endured a difficult period during which Frankfurt’s defensive organization repeatedly deteriorated.
As discussed in Get German Football News‘ January Eintracht Frankfurt transfer primer, Koch’s inability to consistently organize the back line became one of the team’s most pressing concerns. The problems continued through the coaching change from Dino Toppmöller to Albert Riera.
Koch nevertheless demonstrated that he remained capable of inspirational performances. During February’s 1-3 home defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, the defender scored Frankfurt’s only goal, nearly completed a remarkable second-half comeback, and earned GGFN’s Player of the Match honors.
The question has always been whether Koch can produce such performances consistently.
Frankfurt’s defensive problems have hardly disappeared under Hütter. As noted in Get German Football News’ comprehensive 2026/27 Frankfurt tactical preview, the returning head coach’s aggressive pressing system places considerable demands on the defenders, particularly when opponents succeed in bypassing the first wave of pressure.
Hütter has already experimented with different defensive configurations in search of greater stability. The Austrian’s switch to a back three in September’s victory over Mainz produced encouraging results, but subsequent setbacks demonstrated that Frankfurt’s structural difficulties remain unresolved.
Against Köln, Koch provided precisely the sort of response his coach had demanded. One clean sheet cannot erase the defensive failures of recent months, but the captain’s improved performance offered an encouraging sign that Frankfurt might finally be moving in the right direction.
Hütter’s decision to publicly defend Koch ahead of the match has, at least for one evening, been vindicated. The challenge now is to ensure that the improved performance proves to be something more than another temporary reprieve.
