Florida State is coming off a disappointing 44-20 loss to Louisville, a game in which the Seminoles blew an early 14-0 lead before allowing 35 unanswered points. The defeat has added to the frustration surrounding Norvell, who is now in his seventh season as head coach.
His latest comments about the importance of the Miami game did little to calm the situation, drawing more criticism from fans and analysts on social media.
Bomani Jones, CFB Fans React to Mike Norvell’s Comments
Norvell tried to emphasize the importance of the rivalry during his press conference ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the No. 3 Hurricanes.
“This is a matchup we train and prepare for 365 days a year. This is a matchup that means a lot to our program, to our players, and to everyone who is part of this program,” Norvell said. “This will be a game that you remember forever.”
However, the comments quickly drew criticism on social media, especially after Florida State, currently ranked 59th in PFN’s CFB Team Offense Impact metrics with an Impact Rating of 77.5, collapsed against Louisville.
Analyst Bomani Jones delivered a blunt assessment of Norvell’s situation, writing, “Mike Norvell’s time is up, but Florida State can’t afford to move on.”
The FSU Uniform Tracker account also weighed in on the upcoming rivalry game, posting, “Canes ready to end Mike Norvell’s tenure in their classic unis.”

Analyst Rick Ballou was even more critical of the Seminoles coach. “Norvell is doing his best Vince McMahon, just messing w FSU fans now. He shouldn’t be allowed to use the word standard after destroying the program,” Ballou wrote.
Other fans questioned whether Norvell’s expectations matched what the team had shown on the field. One commenter wrote, “His definition of ‘play at a high level’ is not remotely close to reality.”
Another fan looked ahead to the Miami game with little optimism, writing, “He’s going to have a front row seat to see just how far behind Miami we really are.”
Norvell’s Contract Makes a Coaching Change Complicated
Despite the criticism, moving on from Norvell would be a major financial decision for Florida State.
Following the Seminoles’ impressive 13-1 season and ACC championship in 2023, the university rewarded him with an eight-year contract extension worth more than $84 million.

His buyout has been reported at roughly $50 million during the 2026 season, though the exact amount depends on the timing and calculation of his remaining compensation.
That leaves Florida State facing a difficult decision. The administration must consider the frustration among fans and supporters while weighing the cost of making a coaching change.
