The Chicago Bears and the NFL lost a true legend of the sport today, as Mike Ditka passed away at 86.
Born Michael Keller Dyczko Jr. on October 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, his family changed their name to Dikta because Dyczko was too difficult for people to pronounce. He went on to become one of the most recognizable figures not only in sports but also in pop culture.

Ditka won a championship as a player with the Bears in 1963, and he led them to the franchise’s only Super Bowl win in 1985. As a player, he revolutionized the tight end position by winning Rookie of the Year in 1961 and becoming the first tight end to surpass 1,000 yards in a season. He was also the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the class of 1988.
As a coach, he was the perfect hire for a franchise that needed a spark, and his fiery passion came through in everything he did. He led the Bears to the playoffs seven times over his 11 seasons in the Windy City and to three NFC Championship Games.
Jarrett Payton, whose father, Walter Payton, was the centerpiece of Ditka’s offense during their run to Super Bowl XX, made the announcement live on air after receiving the news.

Jarrett also shared a statement from the family:
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.
With love and gratitude, The Ditka Family
