Romano: ‘Conversations’ will ‘for sure’ take place — Man Utd on verge of agreement with ‘world-class’ defender

Manchester United are mulling over whether they should activate the 12-month option in Lisandro Martinez’s contract.

Should they decide to do so, the centre-half will be tied to Old Trafford until June 2028, rather than June 2027.

Given he has proven his ‘world-class’ abilities since joining the club in 2022, the only reason United would consider parting ways with Martinez is because of his checkered fitness record.

The World Cup winner is one of the side’s most injury-prone players of recent years, having suffered at least one lengthy setback in each season he’s represented United.

It means that now, after four years as a Red, he has accumulated only 80 Premier League appearances.

The most Martinez has made in a single campaign came in his maiden term, when he featured 27 times before fracturing his metatarsal, while his fewest came in the following season, when he played only 11 league games and for just 648 minutes across 2023/2024.

Yet, his stellar performances when he is fully fit may have done enough to buy him some time at United.

The 28-year-old is – by some distance – the best defender at Old Trafford, so Michael Carrick will be crossing his fingers that he stays available for the duration of 2026/2027.

Before Martinez enters what will be the final year of his deal, Fabrizio Romano has shared some insight into the situation: “Man United have a clause to extend the contract until 2028. So they feel calm. They feel in control.

“He’s 28. So at the peak of his experience, he has had some bad luck with injuries over recent years, but Man United still believe in Lisandro as a leader – as a top defender.

“At the moment, the situation is under control. The conversations will take place, for sure, in the next few months. At the moment, this is not in advanced negotiations with any other side. So I would say that this one is considered under control.”
