Suspected thief sought for 'several' Whitby restaurant break-ins; man charged in Port Perry killing

An unidentified man is sought for allegedly breaking into “several” Whitby restaurants and stealing cash.

Durham Regional Police say officers responded to a break-and-enter at Los Cabos restaurant at 1009 Dundas St. E. – west of Hopkins St. – on Friday, Sept. 28, 2026.
Investigators determined a thief “stole an amount of currency from this location,” police said in a statement released Wednesday.
“In 2025, officers responded to several similar break-and-enters at a number of Whitby restaurants and investigators believe the same suspect is responsible for all incidents,” police said.
Police have now released images of a suspect captured by a security camera, hoping members of the public will recognize the man and come forward with his identity.

SUSPECT CHARGED IN PORT PERRY MURDER
A man was arrested hours after another man was found slain in Port Perry on Tuesday.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to a “sudden death call” near Water St. and Mary St. around 8 a.m.
“Officers arrived on scene and located a male with traumatic injuries,” police said in a statement released Wednesday. “He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The victim was subsequently identified as Taylor John Frey, a 32-year-old from Port Perry.
“The homicide unit began an investigation and identified a suspect, who was arrested at approximately 2:30 p.m. without incident,” police said.

Ryan Bullock, 33, of Port Perry, is charged with second-degree murder.
He was held for a bail hearing.
“This is an isolated incident and there is no concern for public safety,” police said.

SUSPECT, 28, CHARGED IN BOLTON THEFT
A 28-year-old is accused of stealing from a Bolton business while armed with a firearm last weekend.
Ontario Provincial Police say officers from their Caledon detachment were dispatched to a business in the area of McEwan Dr. E. and Hwy. 50 around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday.
“The complainant advised a lone individual, who appeared to be in possession of a firearm, attended the business and stole several products before fleeing the location on foot,” police said in a statement released Wednesday. “Shortly after, officers located the suspect and took them into custody.”
Police said investigators later recovered a firearm that was allegedly used during the incident and determined it was an “imitation airsoft handgun.”
A Caledon resident is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, obstructing a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and theft under $5,000.
The accused, whose gender and identity were not released by the OPP, was held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
