Last week, Reese was named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year for 2026 after claiming 46 of a possible 74 votes. Her Atlanta Dream team continues barreling toward a first WNBA Finals appearance this decade; the Dream leads the New York Liberty in the WNBA semifinals and can take a commanding 2-0 lead by winning again on Wednesday night.
But personally, Reese received a life-changing contract update after her DPOY nod.

By winning one of the WNBA's major individual awards while on her rookie-scale contract, Reese has become eligible for a max contract extension under the newly-introduced EPIC clause.
The Atlanta Dream announced a new multi-year agreement with State Farm Arena that will make the 17,044-seat venue the new home for all home games beginning in the 2027 season 👏 The Dream are moving from the WNBA’s smallest venue in Gateway Center Arena with a capacity of just 3,500 seats 📈

The EPIC provision, which stands for Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract, was inserted into the league's new CBA this year to fast-track max salaries for the league's top young performers.
To gain eligibility, a player on a rookie contract must be selected to an All-WNBA team or win a major personal award. Reese has done that by winning Defensive Player of the Year, and she now has the power to negotiate a higher salary in her fourth WNBA season.
Reese's 2026 salary is just over $350,000. She is likely to quadruple that salary under her next contract by gaining EPIC eligibility.
That new contract will reduce the Dream's spending power, but Atlanta won't mind that in order to secure Reese's long-term future.
The franchise has just announced it will play all of its home games at State Farm Arena -- which it will share with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks -- in 2027. The choice to trade for Reese in April is one of the factors which made that move feasible.
And who knows? By the time the Dream move into State Farm Arena permanently, Atlanta might be home to a WNBA champion. As the saying goes, "flags fly forever."
