Ben Affleck has defended Drake Maye after fans and media criticised his performances this season. Maye emerged as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks last season, leading the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl, but this year has not gone to plan.

Maye has four touchdowns and seven interceptions in four games, including difficult outings against the Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Maye bounced back with a quality performance in the Patriots’ victory over the Buffalo Bills last weekend.

Affleck has now called out those who doubted Maye after just a few bad games while appearing on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast. He also voiced his disapproval of Maye’s unfortunate new nickname.

Ben Affleck was disappointed to see Drake Maye labelled ‘Drake Maybe Not’ in a newspaper headline following his struggles this season. He believes it is unfair to pile on the young quarterback and insisted that the criticism will not help his confidence.

The Batman actor acknowledged that New England Patriots fans have been “spoiled” at quarterback following Tom Brady’s excellence. However, fans should remain patient with Maye because he has already shown that he can compete at the highest level.

“Drake Maye, you see how good a quarterback the guy is,” Affleck told Travis and Jason Kelce. “You see what he’s capable of doing. It’s not like, all of a sudden, his skills have changed, right? I don’t know what the tools are, but I think part of it has to be that confidence is [something] you build on. And negative confidence takes you the other way.

“It doesn’t honestly help that New England is a very hard place to play. Like I can remember getting so mad when The Globe would be beating on Pedro Martinez; I’m like, ‘Why are you writing an article about that? Write that about the Yankees.’

“I saw a headline the other day that was like ‘Drake Maybe Not’; that s— don’t help, man. I mean, who are you rooting for? It’s an example of people expecting a lot; they pay for their tickets. New England got obviously spoiled, but the truth is they were like that before. New England fans were like that when I was growing up, and you couldn’t even watch the games on TV because they weren’t selling out at Foxborough, so they blacked it out. But the flip side of that is people show up. They show up at the games; they’re informed; they’re dedicated; they care.”
