Lane Johnson retires with a compelling Hall of Fame résumé

Lane Johnson’s playing career is over. The debate over his place in NFL history shouldn't be complicated.
Johnson retires with two Super Bowl championships, three NFC titles, six Pro Bowl selections, and five Associated Press All-Pro honors. He was a first-team All-Pro twice and remained among the league’s best right tackles well into his 30s. Those honors provide the foundation of Johnson’s Pro Football Hall of Fame case. The film strengthens it.

At his peak, Johnson combined uncommon athleticism with the strength and technical control required to neutralize elite pass rushers. Philadelphia trusted him in isolated protection situations, allowing the offense to allocate help elsewhere. His ability to handle those assignments shaped what the Eagles could call.
Johnson also performed at a championship level across different coaching staffs, schemes, and quarterback situations. He helped Philadelphia win Super Bowl LII following the 2017 season and Super Bowl LIX seven years later.
The longevity between those titles is significant. Johnson was not merely a remaining veteran on the second championship roster. He was still one of the league’s best players at his position today when he announced his decision. He allowed no sacks during the 2024 regular season while helping clear the way for Saquon Barkley’s 2,005 rushing yards.
Right tackles have historically received less recognition than players protecting a quarterback’s blind side. Modern offenses and modern pass rushers have weakened that distinction. Defenses move their premier rushers across the formation, making high-level tackle play essential on both sides. Johnson met that challenge for more than a decade. His résumé includes the honors, team success, longevity, and dominant peak expected of a Hall of Fame offensive lineman.
His next football honor should be induction in Canton five years from now.
