The New York Knicks’ roster could look completely different less than 12 months after winning the NBA championship. The futures of both Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart are up in the air heading into the 2026/27 season.

While Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges are all under contract for at least two more seasons, Towns and Hart are entering the final guaranteed years of their respective deals. The Knicks are reportedly “not close” to reaching an agreement with either player, leaving their futures in New York uncertain.

Knicks could trade Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart after winning title

Shams Charania has suggested that Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart may not finish the season with the New York Knicks. If the two sides cannot agree on contract extensions, the Knicks could decide to trade either player at the deadline rather than risk losing them in free agency.

Charania reported: “This is a growing cloud around the New York Knicks, and Karl-Anthony Towns has made it clear he is willing to take a considerable discount on his contract extension coming up, just like his teammates have. But right now, the Knicks want him to take a substantial pay cut that he believes to be an extreme discount…

“Josh Hart has already hinted that as this gets closer to February, which is around the trade deadline, the temperature could rise if Karl-Anthony Towns and Hart himself have not extended. So far, these sides are not close.”

Although Towns is eligible for a four-year, $276 million max extension, the Knicks are reportedly only willing to offer him $200 million. Towns would reportedly meet somewhere in the middle, but that seems unlikely at this stage.

Meanwhile, Josh Hart is eligible for a four-year, $132 million deal, but the Knicks are unlikely to offer him anywhere near that figure. They are reportedly willing to offer Hart around $20 million per season rather than the $33 million annual salary he could command on a max deal.
