Reggie Gilliam returns to Buffalo with more on his agenda than facing familiar teammates. The Patriots signed the veteran fullback to help expand their offense. Through three games, the contribution they envisioned has been difficult to establish, and a lingering knee injury adds another complication before Sunday’s reunion.

Gilliam traveled with New England despite being listed as questionable. His availability remained unresolved, but his recent workload offers another question: how much can the Patriots realistically ask him to do?
According to Patriots.com’s roster analysis, Gilliam played eight offensive snaps against Jacksonville last week. That is a limited opportunity for a player whose value depends on helping an offense create better running conditions.
Buffalo Shows Why New England Wanted Gilliam
Gilliam spent his first six NFL seasons with the Bills before joining the Patriots in March.
All of the Patriots players who entered this morning listed questionable on the injury report -- Reggie Gilliam, Morgan Moses, Christian Elliss, Dre'Mont Jones, Eli Raridon, and Craig Woodson -- are playing today.

Some rare good injury news for the Pats.

Buffalo finished among the NFL’s top 10 rushing offenses in five of those seasons, including a league-leading finish in 2025. Gilliam also helped block for James Cook during three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Those results explain the appeal of adding an experienced lead blocker. Gilliam has worked in an offense capable of making defenses account for multiple running threats and different backfield arrangements.
Replicating that success requires more than inserting the same fullback, however. Blocking assignments, timing and the runners’ decisions all have to fit together.
His Buffalo experience gives New England a useful resource. It does not make the Patriots’ current running game an automatic extension of the Bills’ former success.

Gilliam’s Workload Could Reveal More Than His Statistics
Fullback production rarely tells the entire story in carries and receptions. Gilliam can influence a possession by clearing a path, helping protect the quarterback or allowing the offense to present a different formation.
That makes his usage worth monitoring if he plays. A larger role could give New England more opportunities to establish the packages it envisioned when signing him. Another small workload would limit how much those packages can contribute. The knee issue also makes sweeping conclusions about his early impact premature. Playing through an injury and operating at full effectiveness are different circumstances.
Sunday offers Gilliam a familiar opponent and a chance to help his new offense. For the Patriots, the important development would be finding a repeatable role that survives beyond the reunion.
