Girish AD’s cosy charmer, starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, is out on JioHotstar after a blockbuster spell in cinemas. The Malayalam comedy is still running in theatres in Kerala – proof of its endurance and repeat value. Girish’s fifth feature has even surpassed his 2024 superhit Premalu in collections.
Brilliantly written by Girish and Kiran Josey, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (Bethlehem Family Unit) explores the May-December romance between college student Ashley (Baiju) and her thirty-something neighbour Justin (Pauly). Economic circumstances have compelled Ashley’s family to move to Angamaly in the Ernakulam district. Ashley’s moroseness is short-lived – she settles into her college and manages to impress the tough Moreli trio of sisters.
The Morelis are cousins of Ashley’s neighbour Justin. A brusque but big-hearted caterer, Justin revels in his single status – until he gets to know Ashley better.
Right from the outset, the equation between Ashley and Justin is anything but creepy. This isn’t one of those taboo-busting films, despite the considerable age gap, the fact that Ashley is still studying or that Justin is only a little younger than her uncle Alex (Vinay Forrt).
