During the Pittsburgh Steelers' 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, Rodgers and McCarthy were caught on the Amazon broadcast exchanging expletives on the Steelers' sideline.

McCarthy addressed the moment after the game and acknowledged that he would have chosen different words.

"Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words, but everybody's competing on the field," McCarthy said. "What's said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, usually stays on the field, and that's not the case today. I understand that. But yeah, any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn't have used those words."

The exchange came during Pittsburgh's opening possession, which lasted nearly 10 minutes and 17 plays before Roman Wilson ultimately scored a touchdown.

Rodgers appeared frustrated while waiting for a play call and was heard directing an expletive toward the Steelers' sideline. The broadcast then showed McCarthy, who appeared to respond with an expletive of his own.

The moment quickly became one of the most notable scenes from a frustrating night for Pittsburgh.

It also comes amid some early-season tension surrounding the Steelers' offense. Rodgers previously made comments about Pittsburgh's play-calling that drew attention, while the offense entered Thursday among the NFL's lower-scoring units through the first three games.

McCarthy and Rodgers, of course, are hardly strangers.

The two spent more than a decade together with the Green Bay Packers, where McCarthy coached Rodgers from 2006 through 2018. Their run included nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XLV championship.

Now reunited in Pittsburgh, the longtime coach and quarterback have already had a few moments that have put their relationship under the spotlight.

McCarthy's comments Thursday suggested he considers the latest exchange a heat-of-the-moment incident rather than something that needs to carry beyond the field.

Still, with the Steelers dropping to 3-1 after their second straight loss, the communication between McCarthy and Rodgers will remain something to watch as Pittsburgh tries to get its offense on track.
