Angel Reese contributed to Atlanta’s series-clinching victory in a way that never appeared in her scoring total. During the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s playoff win over Washington, the Dream forward stepped in to pull Allisha Gray away from a developing confrontation. Gray had gone to the floor after contact with a Mystics player and was visibly upset when she got up.

Reese quickly intervened, holding her teammate back and moving her away from the exchange. Gray continued expressing her frustration, but the moment ended without another technical foul being assessed.

It was a useful intervention during a game Atlanta already was working to close out. The Dream finished with a 93-75 victory, completing a two-game sweep and advancing to the semifinals.

The exchange occurred with 3:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. With the series close to being settled, Atlanta had little to gain from allowing a confrontation to grow.

Reese’s reaction helped create separation between Gray and the opposing player. That does not prove officials would otherwise have called a technical or ordered an ejection. It does show her taking an immediate step to reduce the chance of further trouble.

The distinction matters. Avoiding escalation is valuable even when nobody can know exactly what would have happened next. Reese had already received a technical foul earlier in the fourth quarter, making her role in calming this separate exchange an interesting detail from the closing stretch.

Atlanta’s next challenge is already waiting

Gray led the Dream with 22 points and four steals. Jordin Canada supplied 19 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists, while Reese finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Those contributions gave Atlanta a convincing finish to the opening round and a semifinal matchup against the New York Liberty, beginning Sunday, Oct. 4. As the postseason continues, composure becomes another part of protecting a team’s chances. A confrontation can create an avoidable distraction or penalty at precisely the moment a club should be concentrating on its next possession.

Reese’s intervention was a small part of a comfortable victory, but it illustrated that responsibility clearly. She saw an upset teammate, stepped between the players and helped move the situation toward a calmer ending.

Atlanta won with its scoring, passing and defense. Reese also supplied a timely moment of support when Gray needed it.
