Can affect your results
Missing a paper without good reason can affect your results and your eligibility for the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
If a learner can’t write due to circumstances beyond their control – this being illness, injury, or a death in the immediate family – then they (or their parent) must contact the school and invigilator as soon as possible.
Official regulations define a “valid reason” as illness supported by a medical certificate from a registered doctor, or humanitarian reasons such as a death in the family, supported by a death certificate.
In cases of illness or other valid circumstances, a medical certificate or affidavit must be submitted and countersigned by the school principal.
If there’s no legitimate excuse and no supporting documentation, a candidate may be given a mark of zero for that paper, which can severely damage their chances of meeting NSC requirements.
WHEN CAN YOU MAKE UP FOR YOUR MISSED PAPER?
Candidates who miss one or more papers for valid reasons can apply to write those subjects in the June NSC exam the following year, rather than waiting a full year to try again.
This also applies to candidates who:
- Need a maximum of two subjects to meet NSC requirements
- Need a higher grade for a specific qualification or course
- Were part of an irregularity investigation (these candidates get provisional enrolment while the outcome is pending)
Candidates who couldn’t write or finish a paper for other reasons may still apply to write the June exam.
However, this will require but the school principal to submit a written report to the assessment body explaining the circumstances.
Beyond the June exam, candidates can alsoenrol through a private institution or Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme.
Alternatively, pupils can apply for an Amended Senior Certificate to improve specific subjects.
