Scroll’s Rokibuz Zaman on Tuesday won the 2026 Biswajit Roy Memorial Award for people-centric journalism.

He was awarded in the emerging journalist category for his commitment to people-centred journalism.
Zaman won the prize for his ground reporting from West Bengal, Assam and the rest of the North East on matters of citizenship, identity, displacement and the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
His reportage has “consistently tried to put the people affected by these processes at the centre of the story, rather than treating citizenship and electoral issues only as political or statistical questions”, the organisers said.
Zaman’s reports on the citizenship crisis in Assam, “including the experiences of persons facing foreigners tribunals and citizenship scrutiny, has documented the human consequences behind what are often reduced to political or statistical debates”, they added.
The award will be presented at an event in Kolkata on Saturday.
