Ty Gibbs loses ground after very tough Chase race at Kansas

Ty Gibbs’ Kansas afternoon began near the front but ended with a 17th-place finish after a difficult second half. Gibbs started fifth and remained inside the top 10 throughout the first two stages.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver finished ninth in both stages, earning four bonus points. His race changed during the Lap 121 restart when Carson Hocevar moved into the right side of Gibbs’ Toyota, sending Gibbs toward Bubba Wallace and triggering a multicar crash. Gibbs continued without immediately pitting but gradually fell backward.
Gibbs still scored 24 points because of his stage performance. He remains sixth in the Chase standings with 2,188 points, 94 behind Kyle Larson. The stage points softened the blow of finishing 17th, but Gibbs still lost considerable ground on a day when Larson collected the maximum 76 points.
