The Minnesota Vikings are sitting at the top of the NFC North after winning their third straight game to open the season. While they struggled to move the ball for much of the second half against the desperate Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Vikings secured a 23-16 road victory over their winless opponent.

The game marked the return of quarterback Kyler Murray. The former Arizona Cardinal had suffered a concussion early in the first quarter of the opening game of the season and he was in concussion protocol in Week 2. However, he was deemed healthy early in the week before the Vikings traveled to Tampa.

Murray completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The Vikings offense was limited as superstar wideout Justin Jefferson was forced out of the game midway through the first quarter with an ankle injury. He had caught 2 passes for 32 yards before he had to leave the game.

Murray completed a 41-yard TD pass to speedster Jordan Addison with slightly more than 4 minutes to play in the second quarter. That play gave the Vikings a 17-10 lead and they were never headed after that even though the offense struggled to move the ball in the second half.

However, the Vikings defense shut down Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay attack. The Vikings defense sacked Mayfield 6 times and Murray was appreciative of the work that linebacker Eric Wilson (10 tackles and 1.5 sacks) and his teammates did throughout the game.

“That defense is real,” Murray said at his postgame press conference. “I’m super appreciative of how good they are and how much they helped us win.”
