UTSA vs. Colorado State football: Preview, scouting report, betting info and prediction

Just moments after leaving the field in Austin following a 30-6 loss to No. 1 Texas, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor was already worried about one player in particular for Saturday's matchup against Colorado State.

Sophomore quarterback Hauss Henjy, a transfer from Oklahoma State and TCU who played at Aledo, had thrown for 619 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception through his first three starts at Colorado State, adding 128 yards and a score on the ground.
"We've got to be stronger, bigger, faster, better leverage, all of those things," Traylor said. "That quarterback is the real deal out of Aledo. He's a dude, man."
What Traylor didn't know at the time was that Henjy had suffered a hamstring injury during Colorado State's loss to BYU earlier that day. Backup K'Saan Farrar ended up leaving that game due to injury, too.
ESPN reported Friday that Henjy is doubtful to play against UTSA when the teams clash at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Alamodome, leaving the Rams without their top weapon while complicating the Roadrunners' preparation.

Traylor said UTSA put together plans for all three potential signal-callers. Farrar, a redshirt freshman UConn transfer who followed first-year coach Jim Mora to Colorado State, went 13-of-23 passing for 70 yards with an interception against BYU before exiting. Third-string option Darius Curry, a junior, hit 6 of 8 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Linebackers Owen Pewee and Darion White said the Roadrunners were focused on being sharp in their fundamentals regardless of who takes the field.
"It don't really change none at all," Pewee said. "We just still going to go out there and prepare like he's on the field. So whoever's up there, it don't matter to us. We still going to go out there and do what we do."

Players to watch:With the quarterback situation in flux, the Rams will likely lean on a strong offensive line and running back Mel Brown, who is averaging 9.8 yards per carry through three games. The Roadrunners will also need to watch the big-play potential of receiver Cedric Ross, who averages 25.4 yards per reception. Traylor said Colorado State's defense will test UTSA with a "big and physical" defensive line, along with a potent edge rusher in Kenyon Agurs.
When UTSA has the ball
Colorado State's defense ranks No. 2 in the country with 10 total takeaways and will throw a mix of fronts at UTSA's offensive line. The Roadrunners have struggled with pass protection, and guard Ben Rios said the unit's performance was "definitely not to the standard" last week. Traylor sees room for optimism, believe a shuffling, banged-up tackle rotation is making progress.
"We're trending in the right direction. I know it doesn't look that way on video," Traylor said. "We're probably two to four weeks away from, if we can stay healthy, getting to where I thought we'd be last spring."
When Colorado State has the ball
The Roadrunners are preparing to see "a lot of offense" from the Rams, Traylor said, expecting a heavy dose of the running game, play-action, and efforts to get the ball on the perimeter. After putting together some strong spurts against Texas, UTSA's defense is hoping to maintain momentum on Saturday.
"We got a real, real good confidence in this defense," Pewee said. "We seen what we could do, what we're capable of now. So everybody's just pushing each other."

UTSA vs. penalties
Through three games, UTSA has posted the most penalty yardage in the country at 115 yards per game, drawing an average of 11.3 flags per game. Those missteps have often put the Roadrunners behind the sticks, contributing to the team's 7-for-35 performance on third down this season - a 20% rate that ranks next to last in the country.
"The penalties killed us," Traylor said. "It's hard to be good on third down when you're third-and-11 the entire night."
Prediction
UTSA 31, Colorado State 10
UTSA's offense will have a get-right game after being overmatched against Texas, while the Roadrunners' defense will keep momentum rolling, taking advantage of the Rams' quarterback shuffle.
