Popovich, who lost his wife eight years ago, remarried at the age of 77, but he tied the knot with someone who was once married to Popovich's former NBA assistant, Mike Budenholzer. Popovich and Budenholzer worked together for almost two decades, which is probably how the former Spurs coach met his now wife.

Popovich's declining health means he needs more help getting around than he used to need, and his new wife has seemingly helped him a ton over the past few years. Here's the details on Popovich's latest news.

Gregg Popovich marries Mike Budenholzer's ex-wife

According to TMZ, Gregg Popovich officially married Mary Barth Budenholzer on September 16, 2026. She is the ex-wife of former NBA head coach Mike Budenholzer, who spent 17 years as a Spurs assistant on Popovich's staff before he got his first head coaching job with the Atlanta Hawks.

Mike Budenholzer and Mary Barth Budenholzer divorced in 2016, while Popovich lost his wife, Erin Popovich, to an undisclosed illness in 2018. It's unclear exactly when Popovich and Barth Budenholzer connected, but it was likely sometime in the last eight years.

Popovich retired from coaching in the Spring of 2025 after he suffered a stroke in November of 2024. He remains the president of the Spurs front office, and he apparently attended several Spurs games last season alongside Barth Budenholzer.
