The Los Angeles Lakers are going to have a fun training camp, as there are a whole lot of new faces on the roster. It is also going to be a huge roster battle, as someone will likely be waived at the end of it.
There are a few names that could be on the outside looking in. For the first time in some years, players on the current active roster will be fighting for their roster spots.
“Clearly, the Lakers need to dump someone, and I think it's going to be one of three players," Lakers insider Jovan Buha said. "It's going to either be Dalton Knecht, Jaden Hardy, or Bronny James."
LA has overhauled its roster so much that it currently has 16 players on the NBA roster. If the Lakers had to cut someone today, analyst Trevor Lane believes former first-round draft pick Dalton Knecht would be the odd man out.
“My assumption is that if they had to make a decision right now, they would not pick up the $6.4 million team-option on Dalton Knecht. He's got between now and Halloween to change their mind," Lane said.
Bronny James is an interesting name to watch as well throughout all of this. The Lakers have no reason to keep him if he can’t develop any further. Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Ward believes he isn’t safe from being waived just yet.
“However, the Lakers brass have to get the roster down to 15 players, with Bronny being expendable along with others like Jaden Hardy, Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers have been trying to make another trade or two ahead of the start of the season, with a need to get down to 15 players and potentially add another big man into the mix, with Los Angeles being thin in the frontcourt behind Walker Kessler and Kevon Looney. With all these players on the roster bubble, training camp and the preseason will be interesting, to say the least,” Ward wrote.
James really has to prove that he has made the jump this summer and can be the absolute best version of himself. LA is hoping that he can turn into a rotational piece this season.
The Lakers have one player they will have to get rid of, and it will be all about performance. While Knecht looks like the odd man out right now, he can prove that he deserves to stay. If that happens, James will also have to show his development.
