Patrick Mahomes needed only seven words to describe how the Kansas City Chiefs survived Sunday night.
“We fought until the very end,” Mahomes said during his postgame press conference.
It was the perfect summary of a 33-30 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts that required every available second.
Harrison Butker kicked a 40-yard field goal as overtime expired, finally ending a game in which Indianapolis repeatedly answered Kansas City. Butker had already connected from 31 yards earlier in overtime, but the Colts responded with a field goal of their own to extend the night. That gave Mahomes and the Chiefs one final possession.
Mahomes finished 32 of 47 for 382 yards and three touchdowns, finding Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals for scores. Royals’ touchdown was the first of his NFL career and came on fourth down. Kelce caught nine passes for 101 yards, while Worthy scored his first touchdown of the season.
Kenneth Walker III gave Kansas City another major weapon. The running back rushed for 117 yards and added 61 receiving yards, finishing with 178 yards from scrimmage. Mahomes still had to provide the late-game answers.
Mahomes delivers when Chiefs need him most
The Chiefs never established enough control to put Indianapolis away during regulation. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns while adding 40 receiving yards. Daniel Jones completed enough timely throws to keep the Colts in position to win, finishing with 210 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Indianapolis even received another opportunity when an apparent Laquon Treadwell fumble was overturned because officials determined he was down by contact. Kansas City refused to panic.
Mahomes continued attacking downfield and connected with Tyquan Thornton for a 45-yard completion that immediately changed the field. He also leaned on Kelce during the most important possessions of the night.
The Colts knew where the ball was going. They simply could not produce one final stop.
Mahomes’ 382 yards represented the volume of his performance. His command of the final possessions showed its actual value. Butker handled the rest.
The veteran kicker made four field goals, including both Kansas City scores during overtime. His 40-yard winner dropped through the uprights as the clock expired, preventing Indianapolis from receiving another opportunity.

Chiefs show familiar resilience in overtime
Kansas City did not play a perfect game. The Chiefs allowed Indianapolis to score 30 points, struggled to create separation and needed two overtime possessions to finish the job. Those issues will give Andy Reid plenty to address before Week 3.
The response should still concern the rest of the NFL.
Kansas City survived because Mahomes remained composed, Kelce delivered a vintage performance, Walker supplied balance and Butker converted every important opportunity.
Indianapolis fell to 0-2 and extended its losing streak to nine games dating to last season. The Colts were competitive enough to make the result especially painful. They pushed the Chiefs beyond regulation, responded to Kansas City’s first overtime field goal and came within one defensive stop of leaving Arrowhead Stadium with an upset.
That stop never arrived.
Mahomes’ quote was simple, but it captured the difference between the teams. Indianapolis fought long enough to create a legitimate chance.
Kansas City fought until there was no time left.
