Jon Jones jumps to Gable Steveson's defense following UFC 331 upset loss

Jon Jones has broken his silence in the wake of Gable Steveson‘s huge upset loss at UFC 331.

With Jones by his side and acting as his cornerman, Steveson was in good hands. The Olympic gold medalist had everything. The pedigree. The coaches. The look. He was set to become the next big thing in the UFC heavyweight division and possibly the new star of the sport. But that dream took a hit when Sean Sharaf, who closed at a massive +1000 underdog, delivered a 12-second knockout on Saturday. Steveson must now pick himself up and try again if his hopes of becoming one of the greats materialize, and Jones still believes it will happen.

Gable Steveson has been dealing with backlash following his defeat to Sharaf. Many, including Daniel Cormier, have bashed the wrestler for leaving the octagon before and refusing to be in the cage as Sharaf got his arm raised. But according to Jon Jones, it was his decision.

“I’ve seen some reports online and I really wanted to clear the air,” Jones said in a post on X. “It was my decision to take Gable straight to the back after the fight.Honestly, it was the first time in this situation for me and my instant reaction was to get my friend to the back to make sure he was ok.“

If the drive to become the best remains, Jones does not doubt that Gable Steveson will achieve his goals and more. Adding to his comments, Jones revealed his confidence that the young heavyweight will be back, saying:

“Gable’s work ethic and will to win is there and I stand by him and believe he will go on to be one of the best heavyweights in the UFC. He will be back I’m sure of it.”
