‘Absolutely Embarrassing,’ ‘Trash Team Led by a Trash Coach’ — Calls Mount for Boston College To ‘Fire Bill O’Brien’ After Close Call vs. Maine
· Yahoo Sports
The CFB world is calling for Bill O’Brien to be fired at Boston College after the embarrassing 22-16 close call against FCS school Maine. Maine shouldn’t have been in the game for as long as it was, let alone take it all the way down to the final whistle.
Even though Boston College managed to squeeze by and move to 2-1 on the season, neither of its wins is anything to write home about. Its other win came in a close game against Rutgers. Thus, Boston College fans are fed up, and for some, the scare against Maine could be the last straw for O’Brien.

Boston College Fans Calling For Bill O’Brien’s Job
One fan started off the banter on X, writing, “Literally the worst win I’ve witnessed in my 20 years as a fan. Fire Bill O’Brien today.”

It’s crazy to see a win viewed in such a negative light. But it shows how fed up the fan base is and how much more they want from the program. It’s not just this game that has people talking about O’Brien’s job either, especially after a terrible 2-10 season a year ago.
The Eagles should’ve been able to wipe Maine off the field early, put the game away, and get the starters out so they could start preparing for the following week. Instead, Boston College had to fight all the way to the final whistle to get the win.
Another fan wrote on X, “Trash team led by a trash coach.”
The Eagles are currently ranked 63rd in the PFN CFB Power Rankings, which puts them right in the middle of the pack. After this close win, though, they could see that ranking take a hit when the next rankings come out.
One other fan kept it short and sweet, saying, “Absolutely embarrassing.”
The Eagles have been embarrassing even before this season. In 2025, they ranked 107th in the PFN CFB Defensive Impact Rankings and 58th in the PFN CFB Offensive Impact Rankings.
Another fan said, “If Bill O’Brien isn’t fired after this game, it’s a disgrace to football itself.” It’s the same message echoed by other fans who believe the Eagles should go in a different direction.

Clearly, things aren’t coming together the way anyone would have hoped. O’Brien has a prestigious background, coaching at both the college and NFL levels as an offensive coordinator and head coach, but sometimes the fit just isn’t there.
Right now, it feels like this fit may have run its course. The Eagles would do themselves some justice by getting ahead of the process, cutting ties, and starting to identify who the next man in charge should be.
