Pakistan: 31 killed in suspected militant attack at police headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

At least 31 persons were killed and more than 100 injured in an alleged militant attack at a police headquarters in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, AFP quoted an unidentified police officer as saying on Saturday.

A car allegedly packed with explosives rammed into the entrance of a mosque inside the police compound in Kohat town on Friday afternoon, BBC reported. Friday prayers were underway at the time.
Gun fight between the suspected militants and police officers continued till Saturday morning, AFP reported.
A local militant group, Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a faction linked to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for the attack, the news agency reported.
Of those killed in the “militant attack and suicide bombing” incident, 16 were police personnel, the officer said.
“An exchange of fire with them has been ongoing since late last night,” the news agency quoted the officer as saying. “Their exact number remains unclear.”
The Old Police Lines complex serves as the district police headquarters and houses offices of Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department, Special Branch and other police units.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack on Friday evening and expressed “deep sorrow and regret” over the injuries caused by the blast, the news agency reported.
