New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra has picked up a shoulder dislocation and the timing couldn't be worse, with India's all-format tour just over a month away. The incident happened during a promotional shoot in Auckland earlier this week, where Ravindra dislocated his right shoulder attempting a diving catch while filming.

Ravindra landed awkwardly on a safety mat while going for the catch during filming, and the outcome was a dislocated shoulder.

Medical tests on Friday cleared any major structural damage. But the New Zealand Cricket statement was notably cautious about timelines, saying Ravindra's return would depend on "his progress during the first weeks of his rehabilitation."

NZC performance manager Mike Sandle didn't try to hide the disappointment as he explained that the shoot had followed standard safety protocols and described the incident as unavoidable in practical terms.

"It was a really unfortunate injury," he said. "We're gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can. As with all commercial shoots involving our players, the activities were agreed in advance by all parties, with appropriate safety measures in place. It was a bit of a freak accident, and we'll continue to review our processes around events like this in the future."

Head coach Rob Walter was equally clear about the approach, and he assured that Ravindra will be eased back into action once he is fully fit. 

"With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don't want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to," Walter said. "He's in great hands in terms of his rehab and we look forward to welcoming him back soon."

What does Rachin Ravindra's injury mean for the India series?

New Zealand's home series against India is set to begin with T20Is on October 22, which is a little over a month away. The squad for that series is expected to be named next week, and NZC has already flagged that it is "unclear" whether Ravindra will be fit to feature.

Ravindra has been one of New Zealand's most important players in white-ball cricket over the past two years, most notably during the Champions Trophy campaign in 2025, where he won the Player of the Tournament (2025) award for topping the run charts with two centuries. There is little doubt that his absence from even part of the India series would be a significant blow for the Black Caps' batting depth.
