Girls Soccer: Clatsop rivals return to the pitch
· Yahoo Sports
The time for Clatsop County girls to return to the soccer pitch is now. A healthy Astoria team looks for a bounce-back season, the Seaside girls have a tough task replacing their seniors and Warrenton’s soccer team will play a junior varsity schedule for the third year in a row.
Seaside

Last soccer season was owned by Seaside. The Lady Gulls took the season series over rival Astoria 1-0-1. After the teams tied in round one, Seaside clinched the series with a hard fought 1-0 victory. Behind a strong senior class, Seaside’s team finished second in league to Scappoose and qualified for their first state playoff game since 2007.
With nine seniors gone from last season’s team, head coach Derek Stephenson and his staff have work to do in the early season. Not only did nine seniors leave, but most of them were impact players.
Goalkeeper Mya Feeney, center back Ella Brenden, midfielder Lili Miller and forward Kylie Keranen were key starters for the Seagulls. Other seniors such as April Angeles and Yohali Frias Sanchez played heavy minutes for the Gulls last year.
Returning starters for Seaside will be seniors Mack Haag, Lilly Morris and sophomore Jayden Ahlstrom-Woody. Outside of these three, Seaside will have lots of spots up for grabs. With the first two weeks of the season on the road, Seaside will have a chance to rotate girls in and out to figure out who fits in where.
With 3A runner-up Valley Catholic set to join the fold, Seaside’s road back to the playoffs will be more difficult. Both Valley Catholic and Scappoose are ranked in the top 3 in the initial OSAA coaches poll.
Astoria
If there was a theme to Astoria’s 2025 season it would be injuries.
Top scorer Roberta Chavez missed her last season with a knee injury, Adisyn Hawkins injured her knee early in the season and sophomore Cadence Sopko missed a number of games in the beginning of the season while rehabbing. This really hurt the Fishermen offense as they weren’t able to generate goals the way they had over previous seasons.
A healthy senior class can really help the Fishermen return to their 2024 form. With six seniors and five juniors, the Fishermen are armed with a good amount of experience and youth. Due to injuries, younger players had a chance to hit the pitch which will serve them well moving forward.
In addition to Chavez and Hawkins, seniors on the Fishermen roster include Molly Dugan, goalkeeper Aryana Adams, Paulina Hernandez and Daphne Madsen.
Other players to watch out for this season will be the goalkeeper Adams, junior defender/mid-fielder Clara Moore, sophomore trio Sadie Muller, Zoe Wright and Ainsley Allen. All of these girls had significant playing time last season and are set up to take another step forward in development.
With Valley Catholic, Scappoose and Seaside, the Cowapa League is expected to be difficult. The Fishermen enter 2026 as a little bit of an unknown due to only finishing fourth place last year. In 2025, Astoria’s team was only able to net eight goals and conceded 33, but if the team is healthy those numbers should be much closer to even, or better.
Warrenton
The year 2026 marks year three for the Lady Warriors soccer program.
Coached by Carrie Bond, the Warriors have had a successful first two years. Though the program is not varsity yet, the girls soccer program has been one of the best at Warrenton the last two fall seasons. The Warriors program featured 17 girls last season and will be around that same number this year.
Warrenton so far has 10 games listed on their schedule. This schedule includes two against the Astoria JV team and two against Ilwaco. Game one against Astoria will be Oct. 8 at CMH Field and game two will be Oct. 19 at Warrenton Soccer Complex in Hammond.
