It’s still early days in the 2026-27 campaign, but following a deep run at the World Cup with his country and with the arrival of Andoni Iraola as the new head coach for the Reds, for most Mac Allister has been the standout in midfield for Liverpool this season.
He was key again on Tuesday night against Tottenham in the League Cup, as he scored the game’s opening goal and was influential throughout the evening as the Reds emerged 3-1 winners to advance themselves onwards into the fourth round of the competition.
“I think we deserved it,” Mac Allister said of the victory. “I think we had 20 to 25 minutes at the end that were maybe not as good, but we were playing against a team that knows what to do on the ball that are very intense and so we tried to be aggressive.
“It’s really important to score for our confidence and important to win. If you look back you see the games against Ipswich and Atletico were really good but against Fulham we couldn’t play how we wanted. Now we need to make sure we are ready for the next game.”
Liverpool have just one more game before players head off for the September international break, with Bournemouth up on Sunday with an early afternoon kickoff as Iraola takes the team back to the club and stadium he managed at the past three years.
