One week into the 2026 season, Tony Romo remains on the outs at CBS.
The former Cowboys star emerged as a prominent figure in the sports broadcasting world in the years immediately following his retirement, garnering praise — and rebuke — for his analysis. He has grown noticeably more quiet in recent months, however; Romo was arrested in Wisconsin for suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) in July.
Romo issued a statement admitting he was had an "over-reliance on alcohol" on Sept. 1. He vowed to return to the CBS's broadcast booth later in the year, although Awful Announcing noted in that CBS could attempt to demote Romo for non-performance reasons.

Why upcoming CBS assignments are bad news for Tony Romo
On Monday, CBS revealed its announcer pairings for its Week 2 and Week 3 broadcasts. There was one name noticeably absent from the 13-game slate: Romo, who remains on indefinite leave of absence after his arrest.
J.J. Watt served in his stead as analyst for CBS' A-Team during the network's broadcast of the Vikings' 39-22 win over the Packers in Week 1. He performed admirably in the post, flaunting his knowledge of the game as Minnesota held off its NFC foes.

The future Hall of Famer suggested that Green Bay — and its defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon — would attempt to send pressure to make Murray uncomfortable. Gannon served as Cardinals head coach from 2023-25, giving him a front-row view of what makes Murray tick.
One play later, Green Bay defenders flooded Murray's pocket, leading to a Murray interception.
“Jim, we wondered about the chess match between Gannon and Murray,” Watt said. “Gannon decided to send everybody in. Kyler Murray with a panic throw. He just chucked it up there! And it stayed in the air forever! Easy pick for Nixon
The former Texans and Cardinals standout will reprise his role alongside lead play-by-play man Nantz in Weeks 2 and 3. Assuming he keeps his strong showcases going, he is likely to be considered the favorite to replace Romo long-term.
