Coming off a tough loss, Charlotte decided the best way to stay in the playoff race was to do the bare minimum. Fortunately, it paid off.
Joey Wiemer’s two-run homer generated the only runs of the night for Charlotte. Somehow, this not-so-mighty effort outweighed Buffalo’s solo shot from Davis Schneider. The sluggish lineup should be grateful Wiemer’s 4A talent carried them offensively to a win, because expecting runs out of just three other hits, a walk, and only one runner in scoring position would’ve required Mike Vasil’s magic wand.

Your browser does not support the video tag.All the evening’s magic rested in the pitching, primarily Shane Murphy. Murphy twirled a gem, allowing a run and five hits while striking out five through seven frames. From there, reliever Aidan Anderson cruised through the final two innings.
With their win, Charlotte is only four games back from a playoff berth. However, Durham and Syracuse’s wins keep the Knights at a distance from the postseason.

Knoxville Smokies 8, Birmingham Barons 7
The Barons fought to keep their season alive till the final out, but they always seemed to be a step behind the Smokies. Down 3-0 after Knoxville jumped out to an early lead in the first, Caleb Bonemer responded with a rocket, and Jordan Sprinkle’s RBI triple made it a 3-2 contest at the end of the second.
After Knoxville pulled further ahead with a two-run blast in the third, Samuel Zavala retaliated with a three-run missile.
Your browser does not support the video tag.The tie didn’t last long behind Liam Paddack, who brought up the middle of a pitching crew that hasn’t fared well this year overall. Paddack walked the leadoff hitter and moved him to second with a balk. After Knoxville’s Angela Cepeda got hit, there were two on with no outs. This set up the three-run sixth that became the lethal blow to Bham’s season. Although Zavala and Jacob Burke tried to ignite a rally in the bottom of the frame, they fell short of pushing the game to extras.
Control issues were the biggest issue for the Barons. The arms combined for 12 hits, 10 free passes, and only three strikeouts. The bats were quite effective at generating runs, with seven hits and five walks accounting for their runs, but taking the ball from Lucas Gordon before the fourth was the kiss of death for a bullpen that has shown signs of brilliance recently but wasn’t up to the task when it mattered most.
Even with Rocket City’s loss to Chattanooga, the hopes of a three-peat Southern League title are officially lost.
